Marketplace product image requirements

Every marketplace publishes its own image spec, and the differences are small enough to be easy to get wrong. The dimensions are below; the rules that actually cause listing suppression are underneath them.

Poshmark1080 × 1080Square. Covershot is cropped to square regardless of what you upload.

Amazon is the strict one

Amazon's main image rules are enforced automatically and will suppress a listing: pure white background, no text, no logos, no watermarks, no borders, no props that are not part of the product, and the product occupying at least 85% of the frame. Secondary images are far more relaxed — lifestyle shots, scale references and detail crops all belong there.

Square is the safe default

Most marketplaces crop to square somewhere — in search results, in the app, or in the thumbnail. Shooting and uploading square means you decide the composition rather than the platform. If you upload a rectangle, assume the sides will be cut and keep the product centred.

Resolution enables zoom

Several platforms enable zoom only above a size threshold — Amazon at 1000px on the longest side, eBay at 800px. Zoom measurably helps conversion, so uploading at 2000px is worth it even where the display size is much smaller.

Consistency reads as professional

Across a whole storefront, the single most noticeable improvement is not any individual photo — it is that all of them share a background, a crop and a light direction. A grid of inconsistent images looks improvised regardless of how good each shot is on its own.

Common questions

What size works for most marketplaces?

2000 × 2000 square. It exceeds every common minimum, enables zoom everywhere, and downsizes cleanly for platforms that want less.

Can I add text or a logo to product photos?

Not on Amazon or eBay main images — it is grounds for suppression. Etsy and the resale apps permit it, but it rarely helps.

Does the background really have to be pure white on Amazon?

For the main image, yes — RGB 255,255,255. "Nearly white" is detected and flagged. Secondary images have no such rule.
