A file being a PNG doesn't mean it's transparent. A PNG can still have a solid white or colored background baked into its pixels — the format *supports* transparency, but only if the background was actually removed. This page fixes exactly that: upload a PNG that still has a filled-in background and the tool clears it to true alpha transparency, all in your browser.
This trips people up constantly. Every JPG converted to PNG keeps its background — the conversion doesn't remove anything, it just changes the container. So a 'PNG' exported from a photo still shows white where you expected see-through. To get real transparency you have to *remove the background*, which is what the remover above does. The result is a PNG with a genuine alpha channel — the checkerboard you see in the preview is how transparency is displayed, not part of the file.
Once the background is gone, PNG is the safe default — supported everywhere and lossless. If you need a smaller file for the web and the destination supports it, convert the transparent PNG to WebP with the image converter; it keeps the alpha channel at a fraction of the size. For the full walk-through on any image, see the make image transparent pillar.
