2. Black and White (B&W)

  • Best for: Architecture, emotional portraits, and photos with bad mixed lighting, where color is more distracting than helpful.
  • Why it works: Stripping color forces the viewer to focus on composition and texture.
  • Watch out for: With no color to carry the image, contrast does all the work. A flat grey B&W photo reads as a mistake — add enough contrast that the blacks feel black.

3. High Contrast / Pop

  • Best for: Product photography, vibrant landscapes, and food — bold, punchy subjects.
  • How it works: It deepens shadows and brightens highlights, making colors feel more saturated without looking unnatural.
  • Watch out for: Pushed too far, highlights "clip" to pure white and lose all detail (a blown-out sky). Back off if the brightest areas turn into flat white patches.

4. Sepia

  • Best for: Historical or stylized portraits and artistic projects that want a warm, antiqued feel.
  • Pair it with: A gentle vignette or a little grain. Sepia alone can look like a default phone filter; the extra texture is what sells the "aged print" effect.

Advanced Editing: Go Beyond Presets

Saving Filtered Photos for the Web

Filtering is only half the job. If the image is headed for a website, a blog, or a store listing, the file format you save it in decides how fast that page loads — and page speed affects both your visitors and your search ranking.

The web has been steadily moving away from heavy, older formats. The classic JPEG fell from 40% of all images in 2022 to about 32% in 2024, while the more efficient WebP climbed to roughly 12% (HTTP Archive Web Almanac, 2024). The newer AVIF format is still small but grew nearly four times over the same two-year window, per the same report.

The reason for that shift is simple: modern formats are smaller. Google's own compression study found WebP files are 25%–34% smaller than equivalent JPEGs at the same structural quality (SSIM) index (Google for Developers) — roughly a third of the image weight saved with no perceptible loss in quality.

What that means for you in plain terms:

  • WebP is the safe default for web use today — smaller than JPEG at the same visual quality, and supported by every modern browser.
  • JPEG is still the most compatible choice for emailing, printing, or sending to someone on an old device.
  • PNG is best for graphics, logos, and screenshots with sharp edges or transparency — not filtered photographs, where it produces needlessly large files.

Why bother? Images are usually the heaviest thing on a page, and Google's Core Web Vitals reward fast loads. The Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) metric — often an image — should fire within 2.5 seconds at the 75th percentile of real visits to count as "good" (web.dev). Trimming a 200 KB hero photo to 130 KB in WebP can be the difference between hitting that target and missing it.

The 80/20 Rule of Photo Editing

When applying filters or manual adjustments, remember the 80/20 rule: Less is more.

A common beginner mistake is cranking saturation or filter intensity to 100%. It looks artificial. The best filters are the ones where the viewer cannot tell a filter was used — they just see a naturally good photo.

  • If you boost contrast, do it gently.
  • If you warm up the photo, keep skin tones looking human.
  • When in doubt, dial the effect back by 20%.

A simple gut check: view the original and the filtered version side by side. If your first reaction is "wow, strong filter," it is too strong. The goal is for people to notice the photo, not the editing.
