A blurry or badly cropped thumbnail can kill a video's CTR (Click Through Rate) before it even gets a chance. YouTube's requirements seem simple, but there are hidden traps.
The Specs (2026 Update)
- Resolution: 1280 x 720 pixels (Minimum width 640px).
- Aspect Ratio: 16:9.
- Max File Size: 2MB.
- Formats: JPG, GIF, BMP, or PNG.
The "Safe Zone" Problem
On mobile, the bottom-right corner of your thumbnail is covered by the Timestamp (e.g., "10:24").
- Avoid: Putting key text or logos in the bottom right corner.
- Do: Keep the action centered or to the left.
How to Check Your Thumbnail
Don't guess. Use our specific YouTube Resizer tool.
- Upload your image.
- The tool automatically locks the aspect ratio to 16:9.
- It warns you if the resolution is too low.
- You can crop exactly what you need.
